AVLF’s Safe and Stable Homes team was honored with two special awards this month, which recognize their commitment to lifting Atlanta communities.

We are grateful to our March 2018 volunteers.

Last month, we offered more holistic services to the Thomasville Heights community at our Turn Up and Turn Out Event.

AVLF board member Adria Perez was presented with the Trailblazer award, and staff member Gabriela Medina Núñez gave a student testimony.

AVLF distributes children’s books during every Saturday Lawyer Clinic, where volunteer attorneys meet with clients about housing and employment issues. The reason why might surprise you. 

11Alive met with a Forest Cove resident and AVLF staff to discuss the housing issues that students and tenants face in the Thomasville Heights neighborhood.

Lana’s eye was badly swollen and red. She’d been to the ER twice for a range of symptoms. Her children were having trouble breathing. A highly dangerous strain of mold had infested Lana’s apartment – and no one came to treat it.

Through an intensive alternative spring break, law students learned about how their degree can combat housing instability and enrollment turnover.

I could tell you about my coworkers, who are crazysmart and kind and could work anywhere but all choose AVLF every day. When I started working here, there were 10 of us. Now there are more than 30 fulltime staff members. I have no doubt that soon there will be 40. It’s awe-inspiring.

Ms. Talley fled to the Safe Families Office, having made a narrow – and lucky – escape. After attempting to end her relationship, her boyfriend held her hostage for nearly a week. He took her phone so she couldn’t call for help.
