Children who accompany their parents to the SFO can entertain themselves with a new kids’ kitchen, which includes kid-sized pots and pans and play food.

This past month AVLF received funding from a number of sources for our Standing With Our Neighbors program and Domestic Violence programs. We are deeply grateful for these organizations’ contributions and appreciate their commitment to AVLF’s mission.  

AVLF Deputy Director Michael Lucas and Elora Raymond recently appeared on WABE’s “Closer Look.” The pair spoke to Rose Scott and Jim Burress about Atlanta’s eviction crisis as part of the radio show’s on-going series on affordable housing in Atlanta. 

The 5th Annual Beer Tasting & BBQ Battle, held on the evening of June 8, raised over $80,000 for the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation and the Atlanta Legal Aid Society.

Producer Stephannie Stokes spent time learning about how AVLF is advocating for tenants in the Thomasville Heights neighborhood – advocating for both better housing and better education.

One of five recipients of a scholarship to attend the annual Family Law Institute, Safe and Stable Families Director Jamie Perez was singled out for her accomplishments as an attorney to receive the designation.

The Atlanta Bar Association awarded Elizabeth Ann Whipple the accolade due to her abundant service to the Atlanta legal community and her commitment to survivors of domestic violence. This is the first time the Bar has given the award posthumously.

“You helped my Nana. I remember you.”

These were Deputy Director Michael Lucas’s opening words at for the United Way of Greater Atlanta’s SPARK Prize competition held during the C3 Summit on April 21st.

Now in her first year of law school, Gabriela Medina-Nuñez previously spent a year teaching Spanish in a predominantly African-American, low-income middle school in Augusta. This experience moved her to go to law school. As she put it, “The kids came to school to eat and feel safe.”

Liz’s death has left a void in the Atlanta legal community and in our hearts. Please join us in honoring her memory.

AVLF is one of ten finalists for United Way’s 2017 SPARK Prize. This competition – which had 70 entries – awards grants to organizations that address the needs of Atlanta-area children and families. Check out our video, and help us win!
