Frequently, the Superior Court of Fulton County seeks the assistance of a Guardian ad Litem in high conflict custody cases to advocate for the best interest of the children involved. When the family involved cannot afford a Guardian, the Court will appoint a Guardian who is supervised and supported by AVLF.
Who Can Participate?
Lawyers from any area of practice who want to make a difference in the lives of children and their families. After a full-day CLE training, attorneys are added to the list of eligible volunteers.
What?
Frequently, the Superior Court of Fulton County seeks the assistance of a Guardian ad Litem (GAL) in high conflict custody cases to advocate for the best interest of the children involved. When the family involved cannot afford a Guardian, the Court will appoint a Guardian who is supervised and supported by AVLF.
How?
AVLF recruits private lawyers to serve as Guardians at no cost to the parties. AVLF trains the lawyers to identify the best interests of the children. AVLF’s Program Director mentors and supervises those lawyers as they make thorough investigations and recommendations to the Court about the best course of action.
Often, the recommendation made by a GAL, and sometimes the active involvement of the GAL in negotiations between parties, encourages resolution well before the matter has to go to trial. Even if it does not, and the matter has to go to trial, the partnership between the Court and AVLF promotes a prompt, effective and efficient outcome for the Court and for the parents, and, most importantly, gives a much-needed resolution to children torn between two homes.
