In Her Time of Grief

Ms. Green’s elderly mother passed away after living for 20 years in a senior apartment complex.  When Ms. Green attempted to remove her mother’s belongings, she learned that the building’s freight elevator was broken, and the building management would not allow her to use the regular elevators. Ms. Green received permission to wait a few more days to remove the items. But when Ms. Green returned, she found her mother’s belongings in a dumpster.

The building staff had thrown everything away and insisted they had the right to do so. She searched in the dumpster for important papers and sentimental items, but almost everything was lost or unsalvageable. This outrageous situation was utterly heartbreaking for Ms. Green and her children. Pilar Whitaker of Swift Currie represented Ms. Green, filing a lawsuit and – immediately after trial – securing a generous settlement from the landlord. While money cannot compensate for the lost sentimental items, at least Ms. Green knows that the landlord was held accountable.  Thank you, Pilar!
