Attorney reunites elderly mother and caring son
While some AVLF cases go all the way to court, some volunteer attorneys dramatically improve their clients’ lives with only a few phone calls. Case in point: Keisha Coleman of Holland & Knight represented an 80-year-old woman whose landlord abruptly informed her that her adult son was banned from the property. The son used to stop by every few days to care for his mother, and she relied on his help.
The landlord was vague and confusing about the reasons for the ban, implying that they suspected him of a crime but not offering any proof. Nevertheless, they threatened to evict the elderly tenant if her son set foot on the property. Keisha made repeated calls to the landlord and the company he worked for. At first, they stonewalled her, but eventually they completed their “investigation” into the son and found no basis for the ban. A little attorney pressure helped reunite this caring son and his elderly mother.
