Intimate partner abuse is one of the leading causes of homelessness.
Survivors often face an impossible choice—stay in an unsafe home or risk homelessness. Abusers may own the home, control finances, or know where the survivor lives, making it even harder to escape.
When Connie courageously decided to flee her ex-partner, she and her two children had nowhere to go. Each night, they parked in a different neighborhood, sleeping in their car with no safe place to turn.
Through the @Promise Center in the Westside, Connie was connected with CHRIS 180, where staff helped secure emergency lodging for her family.
CHRIS 180 then referred Connie to AVLF through the Westside Connect program, ensuring she had additional support for herself and her children.
At the time, Connie had no source of income. Through our Standing with Survivors program, AVLF partnered with CHRIS 180 to provide food, clothing, and transportation so she could attend a career and vocational training program—building a foundation for long-term stability.
Today, Connie is on her way to finding permanent housing and reclaiming safety for her family.
