AVLF Hosts Awareness Fair for World Asthma Day

ASHLEIGH STARNES | May 9, 2018

On May 1st, dozens of community members joined AVLF and partners for food, fun, and facts about asthma in observance of World Asthma Day.

In Atlanta, mold infestations are common. When our subtropical summers meet a negligent landlord, fungus can flourish on the walls, causing a wide range of health problems. Standing with Our Neighbors (SWON) staff members are no strangers to this issue.

The SWON program provides at-risk Atlantans with easy access to free legal support when they face housing issues such as unrepaired damage, wrongful evictions, and – you guessed it – mold infestations. And when a landlord inadequately addresses a mold problem, the situation can quickly lead to new or exacerbated asthma symptoms – especially in children.

For World Asthma Day on May 1st, AVLF joined several of our community partners to bring information and legal resources on asthma to the Dunbar Recreation Center in Mechanicsville.

Our partners set up tables in the gym stacked with educational materials, and outside, AVLF supplied snacks, games, and even a DJ for the kids. We also had several giveaways for participants in the fair – a few families walked away with brand new dehumidifiers to protect their homes against hazardous mold.

We want to provide more holistic services to the communities we serve, and hope to host more events that support the health and well-being of Atlanta families.

This event is part of AVLF’s broader initiative to expand community outreach and education. We want to provide more holistic services to the communities we serve, and we hope to host more events that support the health and well-being of Atlanta families.

A special thanks to all of our partners – your support makes a difference.
