On March 21st, AVLF attended the inaugural Beloved Benefit, where we were recognized for our work in Atlanta’s Westside community.
Hosted in Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the 2019 Beloved Benefit celebrated and honored the life-changing work already underway in Atlanta’s Westside. We will receive $25,000 to further the work of the Standing with Our Neighbors Program on the Westside.
The award is inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s idea of the “Beloved Community”. Dr. King believed the Beloved Community was not a lofty ideal, but instead a realistic goal achieved by a community committed to nonviolent beliefs and actions:
Dr. King’s Beloved Community is a global vision, in which all people can share in the wealth of the earth. In the Beloved Community, poverty, hunger and homelessness will not be tolerated because international standards of human decency will not allow it. Racism and all forms of discrimination, bigotry and prejudice will be replaced by an all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood. In the Beloved Community, international disputes will be resolved by peaceful conflict-resolution and reconciliation of adversaries, instead of military power. The hope and spirit of the Beloved Community served as the creative fuel for the creation of the Beloved Benefit – a chance to celebrate successes and uplift Atlanta’s Westside community.
This inspiring evening included notable speakers, award-winning musicians, powerful stories, and a crowd full of citizens committed to the ideal of the Beloved.

Libby is originally from Columbus, Georgia. She has served the Atlanta community for almost 17 years in various capacities.
Prior to working at AVLF, Libby worked as the Director of Institutional Advancement at Atlanta Technical College. Prior to this, she raised funds for ovarian cancer research and served in fundraising and community outreach roles at Visiting Nurse|Hospice Atlanta. She was a communications assistant in the Office of Governor Roy E. Barnes after graduating from Clemson University with a BA in Political Science.
