When Marisol first came to AVLF’s Safe Families Office, she was seeking protection from an abusive husband who had terrorized her for years. With the help of our advocates, she successfully filed for a 12-month Temporary Protective Order (TPO). This would be a crucial year of safety and peace for herself and her children.
But when that order expired, her abuser forced his way back into her life, reigniting the fear she had worked so hard to escape. Determined not to return to the cycle of abuse, Marisol returned to the Safe Families Office, where she filed a new TPO and was connected with AVLF’s Family Law Program for additional support.
Our Family Law team immediately stepped in—helping Marisol file for divorce and ensuring she felt safe and supported throughout the process. Knowing how difficult it would be for her to face her abuser in court, the team met Marisol in her own community through our mobile advocacy van, creating a space where she could prepare with confidence and care.
After more than a decade of enduring violence and fear, Marisol’s courage and AVLF’s dedicated legal and emotional support, led to a powerful outcome. She was granted a divorce, full custody of her children, and a renewed sense of security.
Today, Marisol is rebuilding her life free from violence, ready to write her next chapter in safety and peace.
