Every October, communities nationwide come together to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). For AVLF, this month is more than purple ribbons and vigils, it’s about honoring survivors, amplifying their voices, and raising awareness of the legal and community support that can help them find safety and stability.
At the center of this work is our Safe and Stable Families teams. Every day, our attorneys, advocates, and volunteers stand with survivors of intimate partner abuse, offering legal representation, safety planning, and direct connections to resources. Whether it’s helping someone obtain a Temporary Protective Order (TPO), accompanying them to court, or linking them with housing and financial supports, our teams exists to ensure survivors don’t face the legal system, or life-changing decisions, alone.
This DVAM, here’s how we’ll be showing up, and how you can join us.

“Shed the Light” — October 3–5, 2025 (Dusk)
Domestic Violence too often remains in the shadows. From Oct 3–5, place a purple light on your porch (or inside your home) starting at dusk to help “Paint Atlanta Purple.” Partners like Spelman, Alma Domestic Violence Foundation, and the Mayor’s Office of Violence Reduction are lighting up the city.

Purple Thursday — October 16, 2025
The third Thursday in October is Purple Thursday—a national day of action. Wear purple, post a photo, and tag using #AVLF to raise awareness and show solidarity with survivors.
Notes of Inspiration
All month, our Safe & Stable Families team (SwS) invites the public to write kind words for survivors. We’re inviting our staff and supporters to do the same! Notes gathered this month may be shared (anonymously) on social to uplift our community. If interested, please send your note(s) to communications@avlf.org
