In late January, Kaiser Permanente (KP) Georgia launched a new MLP between KP’s Social Work team and the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation (AVLF). Since its inception, the partnership has received numerous referrals to support KP members experiencing housing insecurity.
One notable case involves “Lauren,” a mom of two who was referred by her perinatal social worker, Melody Johnson, to AVLF after surviving a violent attack by her husband and receiving a 7-day notice to vacate her home from her landlord due to the incident. An AVLF attorney reviewed Lauren’s lease and informed her of the rights and protections that prevent the landlord from enforcing the notice. The attorney also advised her on how to terminate the lease without penalty once she found a new place to live. As a result, Lauren and her children remain housed while she looks for a safer place to live, and she continues to work with the AVLF team to file for divorce and secure her freedom.
The Kaiser Permanente Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) Cohort Update is a quarterly newsletter about the MLP community where we share updates, resources, and stories.
